On February 26, 1989, 60 Minutes aired a segment entitled “A is for Apple,” highlighting the dangers posed by the apple ripening agent daminozide, otherwise known as Alar. The reaction around the country was swift, as parents started dumping applesauce and schools in New York and Los Angeles cancelled their orders for apple juice. Soon there was what Newsweek called a “panic for organic.” This was the single event that launched the modern natural foods industry, which is now $100 billion in size and one of the most influential forces of change in the business world.
